Truck accident cases that involve collisions with semi trucks, flatbed trucks, garbage trucks, buses, dump trucks, tanker trucks, fuel trucks, and other large business vehicles typically involve vehicles required to follow federal safety rules and regulations. That determination is important because the federal laws, rules, and safety regulations that apply to commercial motor vehicles are different than the state laws that apply to a regular automobile accident.
The federal laws that govern commercial motor vehicle safety are enforced by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). On September 29, 2020, the FMCSA’s revised “hours of service” regulations went into effect. This is an important development because this change allows commercial truck drivers to drive longer hours and driver fatigue is a known cause of truck accidents.
